About Annie at Porthouse Theatre
Annie is an iconic piece of American media, which began as a comic strip, was adapted into a stage musical, and has had several notable film adaptations. The story is packed with recognizable characters, making it important to understand audience expectations when it comes to character design. Silhouette and color were key to establishing the period and tone for the script, especially among the lead characters.
Color was used to separate the social classes represented in Annie. The poor characters, including the orphans, and the Hooverville residents, were dressed in faded shades tinted with tan and gray. The villains, who spend much of the plot craving wealth, dressed in oversaturated, clashing colors, in an effort to separate themselves from the poor masses. The wealthy characters dressed in dark neutrals, with Daddy Warbucks' world existing in black and white. When Annie arrived to the Warbucks residence, she brought color with her, making her stand out against the otherwise restrained color palette.
